We leave Cambridge on 3rd May 2010 and hope to arrive in Christchurch by the end of June 2011.

Our route begins in Cambridge from where we’ll cycle to Harwich and catch the overnight ferry to the Hook of Holland. From Rotterdam we’ll follow the Rhine down through Germany to Mannheim where we’ll cross to join the Danube in Regensburg. Following the Danube cycle path we’ll pass through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, and Romania. We leave the Danube in Bulgaria, traveling across Turkey and into Iran. We’ll spend a month cycling through Iran visiting Esfahan, Shiraz and Yazd, then take a train across the Great Salt Desert to Mashhad.
Leaving Iran the adventure begins proper as we follow the ancient Silk Routes into Central Asia, charging across Turkmensitan on a 5-day transit visa to Uzbekistan. Then it’s into Tajikistan where we’ll cycle along the Pamir Highway through the Pamir Mountains to Kyrgyzstan. From Kyrgyzstan we’ll take the Irkeshtam Pass into China and head east as far as Urumqi. Another train journey will then take us east across the vastness of China to Xi’an from where we’ll cycle south to the border with Vietnam via Hong Kong.
Once in South East Asia we hope to relax the pace a little as we cycle down the coast of Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City. We’ll then cycle back north through Cambodia and Loas into Thailand. We’ll cycle down the length of Thailand, into Malaysia, Singapore then Indonesia where we intend to catch a flight from Bali to Cairns in Australia. We’ll then cycle down the east coast of Australia to Sydney where and catch another flight to New Zealand.
The final leg of our adventure takes us down through New Zealand where we hope to arrive in Christchurch in 13 months time.

Hi, beach time sounds like just what we need – it’s been sweltering the last few days here in Bulgaria. Hopefully we should make it to the Black Sea tomorrow and we’ll treat ourselves to a day off.
We sorted out Iran and Uzbekistan Visas in London before leaving. We’ll be entering Iran on 19th July we think so will still be a few weeks behind you. We’re going to apply for Turkmenistan visa in Ankara then collect in Mashhad, Iran. We found this blog really useful for visa information. Maybe it’s useful for you too..
